MSMEs and Family Businesses Lab

Aalborg University Business School

The MSMEs and Family Businesses Lab is a research lab focused on small and medium-sized enterprises, entrepreneurship, and family firms.

It is a multidisciplinary lab organised by an active community of scholars aiming at building a new paradigm of scientific research on growth creation, innovation, productivity and sustainability of micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises and family firms.

We incorporate family firms under the umbrella of research for SMEs as family firms are usually seen as the cradle of entrepreneurship since most SMEs (especially micro and small enterprises) are family businesses.

Family firms are essential contributors to the economy and employment and are generally known as companies advocating long-term stability and responsible practices. Hence, understanding the role and challenges of MSMEs and family firms in sustainable entrepreneurship is crucial for sustainable economic development. Research in the fields of MSMEs and family firms is an essential piece in establishing a prolonged growth-focused European legislative environment.

The MSMEs and Family Businesses Lab promotes collaborative theoretical, quantitative, and qualitative interdisciplinary research aiming to bring new and meaningful insights, expertise and support to micro, small and medium-sized businesses, and family firms.

We aim to promote partnerships and innovation hubs interlinked with business society and policymakers that will facilitate the establishment of networks essential to create a friendly economic and legislative environment for MSMEs.

The Lab is the hub for international academics working with the aim of creating a robust platform for future-ready MSMEs, where the foundation lies on multifaceted research focused on converting MSMEs’ challenges into future and long-term opportunities.
