New Social Data Science Semester

New Social Data Science Semester

Starting fall semester 2018, the Department of Business and Management at Aalborg University offers a new option for the 3rd semester of their master's programmes, the Social Data Science specialization semester (SDS).

The Social Data Science semester is primarily targeted at master students in economics, management, sociology and political science, but is also open to other interested students. SDS aims at bridging the gap between state-of-the-art machine learning methodologies that are increasingly used in industry, academia and public organizations and the domain expertise in social science.

Need for skills in the area

The programme will introduce students to modern methods and approaches to data analysis from the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence, enabling them to create powerful predictive models that leverage the advantage of big data as well as non-conventional data sources such as text and images. The demand for skills in this area has been growing with rapid digitalization and availability of data.

Academic content of the semester

The semester consists of 3 modules which focus on the basics of machine learning and predictive modeling, the analysis of network and natural language data, as well as the utilization of modern techniques from the field of deep learning. The latter type of machine learning is behind the recent progress in artificial intelligence. In addition, students will work on a 15 ECT project on data science related analytical problems in close cooperation with research units or companies, enabling them to test and develop their skills on real-life problems.

Embedded under the Economics programme

The curriculum has been developed in close collaboration with colleagues from Sociology, Political Science and the Business Studies at AAU and is embedded as a specialization under the Economics programme (cand.oecon). It will be coordinated and taught by Roman Jurowetzki and Daniel Hain, both assistant professors at the IKE group, which are involved in several research projects centered around the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence in research, but also their impact on businesses and the broader society. In cooperation with Datacamp, a leading provider of online learning resources for data analytics, the semester is taught as a blend of online and offline learning techniques, leveraging Aalborg University’s PBL approach.

The SDS website is under construction and will be available shortly under www.sds.aau.dk.
