Jesper Eriksen defended his PhD

Jesper Eriksen from Aalborg University Business School defended his thesis “Opportunities and Education: Intergenerational Mobility and Vocational and Continuing Education”.

The title of Jesper’s lecture, which took place online via Zoom May 7 due to the Covid-19 situation, was "Opportunities and Education: Intergenerational Mobility and Vocational and Continuing Education".

Members of the assessment committee were:

  • Professor Edward Lorenz, Aalborg University Business School (chair)
  • Professor Sandra McNally, University of Surrey and London School of Economics
  • Professor Paul Bingley, VIVE, The Danish Center for Social Science Research

Summary of the thesis

Jesper’s thesis investigates how opportunities vary with geography and the structure of the education system. The thesis first documents differences in children’s opportunities across geography in Denmark. It further shows that local demographic compositions can partly explain these differences. The thesis secondly focuses on drop-out rates in vocational education programs. It shows that having more students with low grades from primary schools can reduce drop-out rates of other students through positive peer effects. Finally, the thesis shows that firms can become more likely to innovate successfully when their employees participate in tertiary continuing education.
