Projects and Plans

1995-2001: co-ordinated the activities of DRUID which is a Research Unit with about 30 scholars coming from 4 different Danish Universities. Extensive information on DRUID including the annual reports for this period can be found on: http://www.business.auc.dk/druid/

1996-99: co-ordinated a major project on the Danish Innovation System in a Comparative Perspective (The DISKO project). This 3-year project, financed by the Danish Board for Industrial Development developed the concept of national systems of innovation through empirical and comparative studies at the levels of the firm, the sector and the system as a whole with a special emphasis on mapping linkages and patterns of interaction. The major results will be published 2001 by Elgar Publishers under the title: Growth, Innovation and Social Cohesion.

1997-2001: The globalising learning economy-project fianced by the European Commission brought together results from several big European TSER-projects related to innovation policy in a form suitable for policy makers. It was pursued together with Susana Borras and Daniele Archibugi and has resulted in two books - Lundvall and Borras: The globalising learning economy: implications for innovation policy (1997/1999) and Archibugi and Lundvall (eds.) The globalising learning economy (2001).

Currently co-ordinating together with Jesper Lindgaard Christensen a project on Product Innovation, Interactive Learning and Economic Performance (PIE-project). This project involves longitudinal case studies of specific poduct innovation processes as well as more aggregate analyses of the impact of product innovation on economic performance. May be seen as a follow up of the DISKO-project.

Currently co-ordinating - together with Ned Lorenz UTC-Compiegne - a project on Labour, Organisation and Competence in National Innovation Systems (The Loc Nis project). The project organises three workshops and a major conference with active participation of project leaders for 15 major European socio-economic projects. The aim of the project is to develop new insights by crossing straditional boarders between epistemological communities and communities of practise. This project may be seen as a follow up of the project on the globalising learning economy.

I am also currently preparing the establishment of a global network of scholars and policy makers using ’innovation system’ as an analytical tool (Globelics - stands for GLOBal network for the Economics of Learning, Innovation and Competence building Systems).

A common objective of my current research is to get a better understanding of 'the learning economy' (an economy where the success of individuals, firms and national economies increasingly reflect their capability to learn). What are the implications for economic theory, data collection and policy? What are the implications for the social cohesion and sustainability of innovation systems at different levels of development?
